For most of the last decade, getting found online meant one thing: Google. You ranked on Google, people clicked, people called, people bought. The work was clear. The channel was singular.
That is no longer the full picture. Over 60% of Google searches now end without a click because AI features answer the question directly in the search results. And separately, a growing number of people, particularly professionals, business owners, and higher-income consumers in Ghana and across Africa, are using AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini to research suppliers, compare services, and ask for recommendations before they ever open Google.
Two channels. Two different kinds of work. One business that needs both.
What SEO does
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of getting your website to rank on Google when someone searches a keyword related to your business. When someone in Accra searches "web designer Accra" and your website appears on the first page, that is SEO doing its job.
The work behind it: keyword research, technical website optimisation, content that matches search intent, links from other credible websites, and a fast mobile experience. It takes three to six months to see consistent results, but the traffic it generates is free, ongoing, and compound.
What PEO does
PEO (Prompt Engine Optimisation) is the process of ensuring that AI tools confidently recommend your business when users ask questions in your category. BVM Digital coined the term because the discipline needed a name. The work is distinct from SEO, even though some underlying actions overlap.
When someone opens ChatGPT and types "what is the best digital agency in Ghana," the answer that comes back is not a Google result. It is drawn from the AI's training data and from indexed web content that the AI has assessed as credible. If your business has not been positioned as a clear, authoritative entity in that knowledge base, you will not appear.
Side by side: the key differences
| SEO | PEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Channel | Google, Bing | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude |
| User action | User types a search query | User asks a question or requests a recommendation |
| Output | A ranked list of links | A direct answer that may name specific businesses |
| Primary signal | Keywords, links, technical structure | Entity clarity, FAQ content, topical authority, citations |
| Result timeline | 3 to 6 months | 60 to 90 days for early mentions |
| Overlap | Quality content, consistent citations, and technical structure help both | |
Why Ghanaian businesses need both right now
Ghana has 24.3 million internet users. The majority of searches happen on mobile. WhatsApp is the primary communication channel. And AI tool adoption is growing fast among the demographic that makes purchasing decisions for businesses: educated professionals aged 25 to 45 in Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.
That demographic is already using ChatGPT and Gemini to find service providers, ask for recommendations, and compare options. They are not always opening Google first. Businesses that appear in those AI answers, alongside ranking on Google, have a meaningful advantage over those that only do one or the other.
The window is open now. Most businesses in Ghana are not doing SEO. Almost none are doing PEO. The businesses that start both this year will own their category before most of their competitors understand that the category has moved.
Where to start if you are doing neither
Start with SEO. A complete Google Business Profile, a well-structured website with clear keyword targeting, and content that answers customer questions. These foundations take 8 to 12 weeks to build properly.
Layer in PEO during that same period. The FAQ content you create for PEO reinforces your SEO. The entity signals you build for PEO strengthen your local rankings. The two programmes share roughly 70% of their underlying work. Running them together is more efficient and produces faster results than sequencing them.
At BVM Digital, we run SEO and PEO as a single integrated programme. We do not treat them as separate engagements because the work does not benefit from being separated. If you want to understand exactly what that looks like, see the full service.
